Where to celebrate Catholic Christmas on a European scale, feel the charm of the holiday, taste traditional pies, foie gras and famous Alsatian wines? Of course, in Strasbourg!
For all French people, holidays are an integral part of cultural life, they cannot imagine themselves without endless preparations, decorations and fun. But it is in this city that festive traditions leave their mark on everything around. The annual New Year's Fair, one of the most beautiful in Europe, is held here. For a whole month, the city center turns into a real magical place where the magic of Christmas is literally in the air.
The first Christmas market in Strasbourg took place back in 1570 and since then the administration and residents of the city have been maintaining old traditions and introducing new ones. So in 2016, it was decided to combine all the shopping areas in one place, in the very center of the old city. The grand opening took place on November 25.
More than 300 tents decorated in the form of wooden houses and chalets offer decorations for the Christmas tree, garlands, souvenirs, products of local artisans, as well as traditional pies, pancakes, hot wines and foie gras goose liver. Concerts and exhibitions are held nearby, quests and excursions are organized for children and everyone, creative workshops work and the doors of museums and cathedrals are open, about 500 events are planned in total. A 30-meter Christmas tree is being decorated in the central square of Place Kleber.

Every year, Strasbourg chooses the guest of honor of its fair. In 2016, Portugal became such a country. All the variety of gastronomic dishes will be available on the territory of the Portuguese village, place Gutenberg. Here you can buy sausages, local wines, beer and sweets, filigree jewelry, ceramics, musical instruments and other products of Portuguese craftsmen.
A visit to the Strasbourg Christmas Market is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the traditions of celebrating Christmas, discover the whole magical atmosphere of the holiday and, of course, taste the gastronomic delights of the Alsace region.
